I was on the train platform the other day listening to the podcast of the Yogpod. I really suggest you listen to this segment, because they gave me the idea of comparing God and J.K. Rowling (or any writer as matter of fact), plus it is completely hilarious!
(if you don’t wanna listen to the whole thing, you can skip to 4:40)
Now I know many philosophers have been doing this comparison-contrast-analogy-thing to prove and/or disprove God’s existence. I just wanted to join the bandwagon and see what I can come up with :D So bear with me, this is purely for academic and experimental purposes only.
ANYWAY, enough of that.
When Simon illustrates himself what he’d be like if he read Harry Potter, he’d instantly rant about the plot. He said “Voldemort, just fucking kill! Just fucking kill him!” (as he talks about Harry’s intentions in the story) and that’s when it struck me.
Why doesn’t J.K.R. give Harry the immense power to kill Voldemort? That way no one would have to die, not his friends nor family. I mean, the book is all about magic so anything could happen.
Harry could’ve fallen into a vat of radioactive waste which would turn him into a six-armed-magical-British-nerd! That would be cool, that way he’d have five more wands to wield when he battles Voldemort.
Or he could have been taken under the wing of Jason Bourne, which would consequently turn him into a two-armed-magical-assassin-British-hunk (assuming that Bourne’s training requires physical fitness). Then Harry could’ve just sniped Voldemort 1000 yards away; he wouldn’t know what hit him!
So why? Why didn’t J.K.R. just do what I just said (aside from the fact that my ideas are just total bollocks)? It’s quite obvious really.
If Harry could just kill Voldemort in an instant, then that wouldn’t be really interesting now would it? J.K.R. and ALL the writers and authors want something interesting.
I believe that God is the same as well. But first, let’s lay out the foundation for the definition of God that goes with this theory.
There are four different types of Gods that can only exist in this world (as I see so far):
- He is all-knowing, all-loving, all-seeing, but not all-powerful. Being limited by power could explain why God can’t do anything to correct the madness in this world.
- He is all-powerful, all-knowing, all-loving but not all-seeing. With the lack of clairvoyance, God can’t predict what atrocities would befall us.
- He is all-loving, all-powerful, all-seeing but not all-knowing. Well that just speaks for itself.
- He is all-seeing, all-powerful, all-knowing but not all-loving. With God being the mischievous evil that most atheists know of, this version of Him completely fits this theory of “wanting something interesting to happen”.
If we, for a split second, believe that God numero quatro is the celestial being that governs this universe, then you’ll soon realise that every wrong/bad/evil thing that happens, is for God’s personal entertainment.
God is obviously the creator and author of this universe, and if we follow the analogy right, God too wants an interesting story.
So let’s pause for a moment and think, “Well I’m sure if the story is perfect ei. nothing bad happens, it’s all rainbows and unicorns, that could be interesting too, right?”
Hmmm… If you wanna see a story that’s all goody-two-shoes like Dora the Explorer, you would presume that this would be the perfect example.*
But even in this simple kids show, Dora and Boots encounter conflicts along the way. Like “Do you see where the red mountain is?” in which they present the children with 11 other mountains of different shades of red: falu red, scarlet, carnelian, venetian red, sangria, maroon, carmine, vermillion, burgundy, persimmon and magenta (link).
The mere fact that they have the problem of choosing the right shade is already a conflict.
So you see, there is nothing in the world that could resemble “all-good” and if it were, I am certain enough that it wouldn’t be interesting.
*I wasn’t so sure about using this as the example, I hope you get my madness in thought though.
Fun fact: First draft was created June 30, 2011 xD
